1. What do you want to do?We aim to enhance public engagement with Campbeltown’s rich heritage, architecture, and geography by installing 10 strategically placed QR checkpoints. Each checkpoint will feature a QR code that, when scanned, directs users to a dedicated webpage containing location-specific information. This initiative will improve digital connectivity, provide accessible educational resources, and encourage locals and visitors alike to explore and learn about the town in an interactive way. The trail can be explored on foot or by bike, promoting physical activity and wellbeing as part of the experience.

2. Why is your project needed?

Campbeltown has a wealth of historical, cultural, and environmental significance, yet much of this information is not readily accessible to the public. Many residents and visitors are unaware of the rich narratives behind buildings, landscapes, and local traditions. By leveraging digital technology, we can provide an engaging, cost-effective, and sustainable method of sharing this knowledge. Additionally, this project will support local tourism, promote civic pride, and ensure that historical information is preserved and easily accessible to future generations.

This project also promotes physical and mental wellbeing by encouraging people to explore their surroundings through walking and cycling. The trail is fully accessible, providing an inclusive outdoor activity that can be enjoyed at any time. Furthermore, it may encourage tourists and locals to make use of vital resources such as bike hire services, local cafés, and the Campbeltown Heritage Centre, helping to boost the local economy.

3. What positive changes will your project bring about?

  • Enhanced Public Services: By making historical and environmental information available in an interactive format, we bridge the gap between digital engagement and community learning.

  • Improved Digital Accessibility: The QR checkpoints provide an inclusive way for people to access local history without requiring physical brochures or guides.

  • Increased Community Engagement: Encouraging locals to learn more about their own town fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation.

  • Boost to Local Tourism and Economy: Visitors will have an enriching experience exploring Campbeltown with an informative and interactive trail. Additionally, the initiative encourages engagement with local businesses, including bike hire services, shops, and heritage sites.

  • Health and Wellbeing Benefits: The trail offers an accessible way for individuals and families to engage in physical activity, whether walking or cycling, promoting a healthy lifestyle.

  • Free Family-Friendly Activity: By offering a cost-free way for families to explore Campbeltown, this project helps ease the financial burden of keeping families entertained during weekends and holidays.

4. How long will your project run for? The project will be developed over six months, including research, content creation, QR code generation, and installation. Once in place, the QR checkpoints will remain a long-term feature, with periodic updates to the web content as needed.

Partnerships: We plan to collaborate with:

  • Local heritage organizations and historians for content development.

  • Campbeltown Community Council to align with local interests.

  • Schools and educational institutions to promote learning opportunities.

  • Local businesses, including bike hire providers and tourism boards, to enhance visitor engagement.

  • Digital and web development teams to create and maintain the online content.

This initiative represents a fusion of tradition and technology, ensuring that Campbeltown’s unique stories remain accessible, engaging, and informative for generations to come, while also promoting physical activity, community wellbeing, and local economic growth.
