Proposal code: AP-2025-03-35

To create a safe off road pathway to allow walking or wheeling between the communities of Bridgend and Bowmore where there are no pavements and no safe pedestrian access.

Estimated Price

7000000

1. We want to build a pathway from Bridgend to Bowmore for pedestrains and wheeling that will allow safe and healthy access between the two communities..

2. There are presently no pavements or pathways which would allow the for pedstrain or wheeling and the is little public transport so at present everyone is forced into vehicles to get from place to place. By building a pathway this would allow more access to the open countryside and reduce the danger to both cyclists and pedestrains who presently use the very busy main road.

3. When the path is constructed it will allow both residents and visiitors safe access to the countryside and figures from Sustrans/Transport Scotland show that a similar pathway on the island between Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte has upwards of sixty thousand journeys per year. The pathways will be used by locals and visitors for expercise and therefore better health as well as being used by local people as a means to walk to work.

4. The pathway has been designed by Islay Community Access Group (ICAG) and developed by Sustrans and Argyll and Bute council and is in the final stages of planning . Once planning permissions are received it is expected that the construction of the pathway will take approximately three years as there are only short periods where certain sections can be worked on due to the presence of wildlife. We have worked closely with Nature Scot to identify where there would be any contact between wildlife and human. The local landowners and Islay Estates have generously allowed for the use of their land fo the pathways.
