Summary

We provide financial assistance to families who have to leave the islands to give birth to their baby(ies). We also provide services not currently available on the NHS to compliment the pre/postnatal services on the island already in place by our local midwives.

Description

Living on Islay and Jura, we are asked to leave the Island 14 days in advance of giving birth (where possible). This causes alot of stress and financial insecurity. As a charity, we provide £30 per day for upto 14 days that you are on the mainland. We also provide 1 paid appointment with our local physio for a post natal examination (our physio who we paid to do a specific post natal course). We have paid for both our local midwives to train up in additional services which compliment our NHS, aquantel swimming class, baby massage to name a few. This last year, we have been struggling with Fundraisers not doing so well and are now looking for help with funding us to continue the amazing work the charity does.

2. The charity is needed among our community as it helps to alleviate some of the stress around the time of giving birth. The financial burden of having to stay on the mainland for 2 weeks is massive and we feel it can cause unnecessary stress/anxiety.

3. The charity brings so much positivity to new family's- specifically mothers. They get the opportunity to join classes like aquanatal while pregnant, and then baby massage once their baby is here, which gets them out the house and doing exercise, promoting good physical and mental health, and also gets them to meet other new Mums in similar stages or motherhood as them which can help massively in the early days of having children.

We aim for this to be an ongoing project for years to come but at the minute we are looking to funding to cover 1 year. Having confirmed by the local midwives, Islay and Jura have an average of 20 births per year, we dont see this many applications for funding, we are averaging about 12 per year, and would really like to be able to continue to offer those service.

We have applied for another grant from the National Lottery to help cover some of the costs so would like to ask for £6,000 from ABC to cover the remainder.

Location: This covers families for all of Islay and Jura. We have recently had interest from other Islands and would like to eventually offer this if funding allows.
