Refurbishment of Tayvallich Community Hall will improve the facilities it offers to the village and to the wider community in Mid-Argyll. It will enhance community cohesion in Tayvallich and beyond.
Description
What do we want to do?
Phase 1 - replacing the hall disabled access, and the provision of a back-up generator to enhance community resiliance.
Phase 2 - re-configure the toilet block and the provision of hot water in the ladies toilets
Phase 3 - install a decking and two patio doors to enhance provision for events (such as weddings) and provision of an additional store.
Why is our project needed?
Eradicating child poverty. The hall is used by the local primary school for the provision of sports facilities, and for other activities. The Parent Council also arranges childrens parties and other community events such as the annual car wash, and wreath-making at Christmas. The hall provides many family events, shows, films, talks - to keep the local community informed and entertained. A separate junior gym club runs on a wednesday. The hall's multi-sport courts provide for sporting activities such as hockey, tennis for all.
Growing the economy. Many tourists use the hall's facilities, especially during events such as "Gala Day", and tourism is an important Scottish industry. The hall were instrumental in setting up "Tayvallich Initiative" which had the aim of providing low-cost housing in the village for essential workers and for implementing "rural burdens" on properties which help ensure community survival longer-term. The annual Kayak symposium - run by local firm "Argyll Kayaks" - brings dozens to the village for a weekend based around the hall which benefits the whole community including the community shop and the Tayvallich Inn.
Climate emergency - "Resiliance Planning" is a recent aim of the Community Hall SCIO. A few months back there was a 4 day power outage - many were caught out by it. Apart from losing heating and cooking many also lost their private (pumped) water supplies. The hall did its best as a "resiliance hub" - making hot drinks on gas stoves - but it too was without power so could not offer heating/lighting/hot food. Resilience Planning involves a back-up generator to better serve the community in the future.
Public Services - The hall provides many services to the locall community. - Yoga on a monday and thursday; Table Tennis on Mondays; "Pickle Ball" on a tuesday; Bowls on a thursday; "stretch and tone" on a tuesday; fencing wednesday; Lunch Club every month provides a meal for the retirees of the village and indeed neighbouring villages. Recently the hall has also been offering First Aid classes. The hall is also a popular venue for Weddings (and funerals); There are regular Coffee Mornings in aid of various charities - Beatson cancer charity, the Lochgilphead Snowdrop Centre, and the Taynish run supports McMillan cancer care. The annual Flower Show is also a very popular event. In addition the hall hosts events such as Films and Talks- often being full to capacity. Friday and Saturday evenings often see the hall hosting Bands and Ceilidls which attract visitors from near and far, encouraging and supporting local artists and musicians.
Positive changes the project will bring
The hall is a vital community asset and needs to be supported and protected.
It is essential that the hall continue to act as a community hub - and that its ability to act as a "resiliance hub" is enhanced with a generator - Phase 1.
Better disables access is also essential - Phase 1.
Given the popularity and wide range of functions of the hall provision of better toilet facilities is essential = Phase 2.
Phase 3 will increase the capacity of the hall, and improve its role as a community hub. Even more community activities will be encouraged and supported. The extra Patio doors will enhance Fire Safety.
The success of the Community Hall helps kindle social cohesion - it is a vital part of our village life.
The project will start in July 2025 and run for 6 months.
