Summary

Building renovation: INHT (SCO 49310) is a useful community space as well as centre of information and expertise on Islay's environment and nature. But the main building is cold, damp and therefore only usable during summer. This would make it much more user friendly all year long.

Description

What we want to do: Double glaze windows and doors, install an energy efficient heating system, completely insulate the old bonded warehouse which is the current building space

Why needed: The centre building is very cold, damp and drafty and therefore only used during the short summer months apart from a few evening talks in a room using an electric heater. the space is multi purpose and could be a useful warm, large, welcoming space all year round for other Islay groups as well as extending the opening of the centre.

Positive changes: The centre is not currently in line with our principles and ethos around greener, enironmental practice and so we wish to renovate in a clean, green, energy efficient manner for longer and wider use. Changes will make it possible to use the centre all year round, it will make for a viable, warm, accessible, welcoming space that other communities adn groups can use all year round, this may also help with some income generation for us in some cases where we could rent the space out for a small sum, it will make the space energy efficient contributing to the wider goals of environmental projects.

How long: we would start as soon as possible, the building is owned by YHA Scotlands who use the upstairs, we have discussed with them our plans and believe they too need to undertake substantial work of a similar nature upstairs so we would expect to finalise necessary agreeements by March 2026 in time to start and works might take a few months but the effects will be long term.
