1. What do you want to do?
We aim to regenerate the Oakbank Community Inn as a vibrant, multi-use community asset in Sandbank. The proposal includes restoring the existing building to create an inclusive, accessible venue that serves as a social hub, community kitchen, training space, and meeting point. We also plan to activate the surrounding grounds with a community garden, outdoor seating, and event areas. This will involve capital works to improve the building’s energy efficiency and functionality, and engage the community through co-design processes, partnerships, and local employment.
2. Why is your project needed?
Sandbank has experienced the loss of vital community spaces, leading to isolation, limited access to services, and few social opportunities. Local consultation, a 2023 residents’ survey, and engagement with community partners consistently highlight the need for shared space that promotes connection, skill-building, and wellbeing. The building has stood underused, and this regeneration will provide a cost-of-living response by offering free/low-cost activities, access to food and learning, and accessible space for groups to meet and grow.
3. What positive changes will your project bring about?
The project will increase community cohesion, provide a space for people to connect, and support local resilience. It will offer low-cost meals, reduce food waste, host skill-sharing workshops, and provide opportunities for youth, older people, and those distanced from employment to participate in meaningful volunteering. It will also enhance local pride and involvement by supporting creative programming, celebration of cultural diversity, and accessible green space for health and wellbeing.
4. How long will your project run for?
The project will start on: 01/09/2025 The project will run for: 12 months
