Proposal code: AP-2025-05-91

Charities Day is an annual celebration of the work of local charities. The Connecting Communities Collective collaborate with the Oban and Lorn Lions Club for a bigger and better festival in 2026.

Estimated Price

7000

The Oban and Lorn Lions Club have, for the last 50 years, run Oban’s annual Charities Day but due to capacity, they are no longer able to do this alone. This year’s has had to be cancelled and this is a great loss to the local community and the charities that attend. The Connecting Communities Collective (CCC) are keen to help to ensure that there is an event next year. We are going to use this year to get feedback from charities involved in the event in the past and those who are not. Through the Argyll and Bute TSI a questionnaire will be sent out through their network. Currently over 30 Charities are involved which is the current capacity of the event, but more have expressed an interest. The project will be to provide organisations with upcyled costume and flag making workshops, using materials from Re_Store, prior to the parade, stalls for charities to raise money and raise their profile, for a map to be produced of activities happening throughout the day around the town at different charity locations and for charities to host workshops around the town for all ages. This would hopefully involve Oban Communities Trust’s Rockfield Centre which could provide a greater capacity for stalls and some much needed inside space. The event has an opportunity to engage more people in a meaningful way. Having a dedicated performance space will help to encourage local gifts, skills and talents.

Why is this needed?

Charities Day provides a vital income for some of the smaller charities and is a really good opportunity for charities to come together and celebrate their work. It helps to illustrate the breadth of work achieved by charities and also helps people locally to find out more about how they could be supported by the different charities in and around Oban. Charities Day is an important part of the life of the people in Oban and it is a great chance to get the community together. Promoting environmental sustainability across the event. Promoting local support and understanding of the principles of Community Wealth Building.

Positive Changes: The project will 1) Help to enhance the profile of charities 2) give charities and chance to collaborate 3) give people a chance to celebrate local achievements and showcase the talents of local people at the end of the parade there is a space for dancing and music provided by local people 4) promoting environmental sustainability and community resilience.

Workshops in preparation for the parade could start from February 2026 and the event would take place on Saturday 6th June 2026.
