To upgrade and refurbish Skipness Vllage Community Hall. To protect our community hall from further deterioration due to water ingress caused by the nature of building materials, natural stone and sandstonne. Lead the skews, remove chimney, pick and point both gable ends and around the sandstone window surrounds. Replace windows to double glazed and ventilated, improved door and door surrounds. Improved toilet and hand drying facilities and replace water damage to walls in toilets, hallway and balcony area. Redecorate throughout

Architect's proposals and detailed designs, planning permission, building warrants and quantity surveys are complete and approved.

10% matched funding has been raised by Skipness tiny community of 134.

We require £128,000 to prepare tender documents for quotes, and to start the build project

This project aligns with Tarbert & Skipness Community Plan 2023-26, - attached

2.   Why is your project needed?

The Hall is an old church, built 1880-1890, built of natural stone with sandstone skews and window surrounds.   Water ingression and internal condensation has caused dampness affecting the walls and causing damage to the internal plaster board and ceiling.   Additional issues include the rotting single glazed window frames, and around the glass.  The heating is old, inefficient and expensive.   Once all these issues are addressed the hall will be in a fit state for community use for years to come.

The building has been in the hands of the community and community run since 1995.

Skipness is one of the most geographically challenged communities in Scotland.   It rates as very remote rural on the SIMD.   Geograhic access raises issues such as the time, lack of pubilc transport and unreliable ferry service, inconvenience and cost of having to travel to access basic services.

Skipness Village Hall is the community hub for the local community.   It is the venue for social gatherings, community meals, weddings and funerals.   Regular Ceiidhs have provided the springboard for many Scottish bands and soloists.

This project aligns with Tarbert & Skipness Community Plan:

  • creating a welcoming, vibrant and confident community and a healthier community
  • a healthier community

It is the venue for:

  • weekly doctor's surgery and vaccination clinic
  • Pollling station
  • a base for emergency services, police, coastguard and other local incidents,
  • Ceilidhs, dances, keep fit,Tai Chi and Qigong, salsa classes, badminton and quiz nights
  • Craft sales and fundraisers
  • Available for hire for pony club, scouts and school

The whole community, from 2 to 93 years benefits from from having he venue for al its activities and the security of knowing it is there in an emergency eg Storm Eowyn Without the hall Skipness would be further isoated and deprived.   No such thing as a 20 minute community in Skipness..

3,  What positive change will your project bring about?

On completeion of this project:

  • The doctor wil have a better equipped, soundproof, warm wellbeing consulting room for the weekly surgeries.   These are a lifeine to Skipness residents.
  • Other visiting health workers eg podiatrist, health massage can use the same room
  • The hall will be a more comfortable place for a Polling Place, Councillors surgeries
  • Tarbert & Skipness Community Plan is updated folowing a meeting held annually in the hall
  • The whole place will be more welcoming for residents who have to rely on the hall's facilities, and for visitors
  • For emergency use for stranded ferry passengers in the event of cancellations.
  • Will provide a place of safety and security for Skipness residents in the event of and emergency eg 2015 March snowstorm and Skipness was cut off
  • Base for refreshments and toilets for outdoor activities e.g. beach clean

4.   How long will project run for?

Once funding is secured and build completed the project will run for at least 50 years
