Winter at Campbeltown Picture House

Proposal code: AP-2025-05-75
Our project has three threads to benefit all sectors of our community. Care Home screenings for seniors and Kids Go Free at Christmas for families and Food Bank Benefit screenings for everyone!
Estimated Price
40000
What do you want to do?
- Food Bank Benefit Screenings – tickets cost just £3 when customers bring a donation to the Kintyre Food Bank. We have great success in running these screenings over the past seven years.
- Care Home Screenings – free screenings of older films for residents of the local Care Homes, Shopperaide and other local seniors’ groups. Again, we have had great success with these in the past and are confident that we can continue to make a positive difference to the lives of the seniors we welcome to the screenings.
- Kids Go Free at Christmas - For the two weeks spanning Christmas and New Year all child tickets will be free. We would also like to give each child a free hot chocolate to have while watching their film. As with the other two parts of the project, we did this to huge success last year and have great confidence we are able to deliver this again and make a difference to hundreds of families during the festive period.
Why is your project needed? While considering this project we identified the following things we wished to address;
- Removing financial barriers to children and their families coming to the cinema
- Providing equality of access to our services (A&B Council’s ‘Outcome 3 – Community Wellbeing’)
- Addressing the on-going cost of living crisis that is preventing people accessing leisure pursuits
- Encouraging people to donate to the Kintyre Food Bank and strengthening our relationship with them and their customers
- Showing films that attract a range of audiences and ensuring diversity on screen
- Alleviating loneliness and isolation by encouraging collective experiences
- Providing easy to access escapism and fun for children
What positive changes will your project bring about? Eradicating child poverty The Kids Go Free at Christmas project provides children with the opportunity to come to the cinema and enjoy an experience that they may not be able to access without CLLD support. Past projects have shown us that regular and enjoyable visits to the cinema improves children’s social, physical and mental wellbeing and life chances. Children thrive in the community of the cinema environment as it allows them to be kids alongside other kids and escape the stress that normal life can often bring.
Food Bank Screenings will provide much needed support to the Kintyre Food Bank which is continuing to see an ongoing increase in users. We will be allowing people a very cheap way to come to the cinema, gather with others and be in a warm place through the winter.
Growing the economy Cost of living is a huge concern for many, particularly families and, with the current uncertainty, people are extremely wary of spending. Campbeltown is a rural isolated community. The immediate and adjacent data zones where the Picture House is situated rank in the SIMD 2020 Most Deprived 20% (position 734 and 719), with surrounding areas ranking in the Most Deprived 30% so people are particularly affected in this area. These projects will alleviate the financial issue with accessing leisure services which has been caused by the cost of living.
Improving public services All three projects will help us to further establish the cinema as one of Campbeltown’s vital spaces for locals and visitors by enabling us to support our young people, our seniors and the wider community through the Food Bank. As the only cinema for 113 road miles and the only permanent arts venue in the area we are cognisant of our role to help rebuild community capacity and resilience in what continues to be a challenging time for rural communities both financially and in their diminishing access to a range of artistic leisure pursuits.
