Mull Music Makers is a grassroots community project providing free access to high quality music-making opportunities for young people living in Mull.

20000
Our project, now in its eleventh year, brings around 40 youngsters together each month from all corners of the island(s) to experience the joy of making. Young people gain confidence and develop positive behaviours as they participate in musical activities where collaborating with others is key. Music provision generally in the Isle of Mull remains extremely limited with no opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument, either in or out of school.
After a major setback from our core funders (Creative Scotland’s YMI Fund) we are desperately seeking funds to enable this lifeline project to continue into the 2025-26 school year. Our successful annual programme typically includes eight weekend workshops, an online programme and a summer school and builds on previous years of experience delivering workshops in the community, which are now well established and very popular on the island.
Three specialist music tutors will travel to the island to deliver the 2025-26 annual workshops programme. Participants will attend sessions both on Saturday and Sunday.
The programme will be curated by the celebrated Scottish musician and educator, Patsy Reid, who creates a wonderfully cohesive and creative learning environment yielding promising results. Her bespoke arrangements are designed to embed and celebrate a feeling of community enabling each participant, whatever their age or stage, to be part of one big overall sound.
Each workshop weekend will conclude with an informal sharing session for parents and families which will gradually build confidence and will reinforce a sense of community through the music. More formal performance opportunities with high profile guest tutors will take place at the planned community concerts and ceilidhs which will be organised to showcase the project and create pride in the community. In recent years our youngsters have gained the privilege of working and performing alongside some of Scotland's finest musicians and educators including, Duncan Chisholm, Hamish Napier, Seonaid Aitken, Anna Massie and Jenna Reid to name a few. Participating in these events gives the young players a huge boost of confidence. These community events are also hugely important social and cultural anchors.
