•
Proposal code: AP-2025-06-141
A new island market celebrating local makers and producers from Ulva and Mull—supporting rural enterprise, community connection, and sustainable island living.
Estimated Price
20000
What do you want to do?
This project will establish the foundations for a seasonal Ulva Producers Market to support local enterprise, increase community sustainability, and add value to the visitor experience. The market will provide a dedicated, weather-resilient space for producers from Ulva and Mull to sell locally made, grown, or harvested products. Ulva is home to a growing community of painters, woodworkers, food growers, and a farmer - alongside two residents developing a new seaweed cosmetics business, who prompted the charity to explore this market project.
Six high-quality, heavy-duty stalls will be purchased for market events, to be shared between Ulva-based producers and invited producers from neighbouring Mull. A lockable, weatherproof timber shed will also be installed on Ulva to store market infrastructure year-round. The structure will be designed to withstand Highland and island conditions, with a secure timber base and robust fittings. A suitable site will be identified in consultation with the community, prioritising flat, accessible locations near the main footpaths, ferry slipway, or Ulva House.
Why is the project needed?
Ulva is a remote island with minimal infrastructure and few opportunities for residents to generate income locally. This project would create a practical way for residents to benefit from the island’s 8,000 annual visitors by selling their own products and produce. It responds directly to community interest and builds on the success of established island markets such as those in Tobermory and Craignure.
Encouraging producers from Mull to participate will widen the offer, increase footfall, and build closer island connections. The market provides a practical and cost-effective platform for residents to test ideas, sell goods, and contribute to a growing local economy.
What positive changes will the project bring about?
- Supports new and existing enterprise for residents of Ulva and Mull
- Stimulates local economic activity from island visitors
- Encourages collaboration between neighbouring communities
- Fosters community pride and resilience by celebrating local products
- Establishes lasting infrastructure that can support future events and activity
The project will also create potential future links with groups such as the Mull and Iona Producers Association and support new marketing and branding opportunities for “Ulva-made” goods.
How long will it run for?
All capital expenditure will be completed by 27th March 2026. This includes the purchase of market stalls, a durable timber shed, delivery, and ground preparation. The first pilot events may begin in late 2025 or early 2026 if conditions allow, but the structure and materials will remain in place to enable longer-term development of the market in future years, led by the local community.
