1. What do you want to do? We want to establish the YETECH Digital Lab, a community initiative providing accessible digital skills training for young people and disadvantaged adults who are excluded from the digital economy. We will run practical, in-person workshops in coding, content creation, cybersecurity, digital literacy, and remote work readiness. The lab will also include peer-to-peer support, mentoring, and access to refurbished laptops and internet for those in digital poverty. Our goal is to build a safe and inclusive space where learners grow in skill, confidence, and opportunity.
2. Why is your project needed? In areas with high unemployment and low digital literacy, many people lack access to the tech tools, training, and confidence needed to thrive. This deepens inequality and cuts people off from jobs, education, healthcare, and community life. Our past work has shown demand from NEET youth, single parents, older adults, and migrants seeking to rebuild or restart careers. National digital inclusion goals are not reaching local communities. YETECH Digital Lab meets this gap by delivering skills and support at a grassroots level.
3. What positive changes will your project bring about? Our project will create real, lasting change in four ways:
-
Skills: Learners gain practical digital knowledge, from CV building to e-commerce setup.
-
Access: We reduce digital poverty with device loans and low-cost internet support.
-
Confidence: Peer learning, mentoring, and inclusive workshops will boost personal growth.
-
Opportunity: Learners will access jobs, freelance work, or pathways into further training.
4. How long will your project run for? The programme will run for 12 months, in three phases:
-
Phase 1 (Months 1–2): Set up space, equipment, staff, and partnerships.
-
Phase 2 (Months 3–11): Weekly workshops, drop-in clinics, monthly events, and mentoring.
-
Phase 3 (Month 12): Evaluation, community report, and plan for scale/sustainability.
Partnerships: We will work with local job centres, libraries, schools, parent groups, and platforms like DigitalBoost UK. We also plan to co-design parts of the programme with people who have lived experience of digital exclusion.
