Proposal code: AP-2025-06-111

Building Tarbert's health, community and enterprise capacity through development of the former disused Fishermen's Co-op

Estimated Price

85000

Quay Spaces has three main aims:

  • increase the capacity for personal and small group health provision in the community
  • expand the provision of group activities in the community
  • grow locally generated enterprises and employment
  1. What do you want to do? Develop the former Fishermen's Co-op disused shop into Quay Spaces - a flexible communiy space providing:
  • Improved personal health and financial advice services to the community
  • Space for local micro-busnesses to start, develop and grow
  • Flexible space for group activities to bring people together
  • Provide a "Community Board" as information hub for local services

2.   Why is your project needed?

Maintaining personal healthcare services

The Tarbert & Skipness Community Plan 2023-26 includes an action to: "Maintain current services including cashpoint, post office, library, village halls, healthcare, Tarbert Academy, emergency services" Personal healthcare provision is currently at risk in Tarbert - there is an urgent need for a dedicated place where private and confidential health and wellbeing consultations and sessions can be delivered for the community, both on a one to one and small group basis.

Following changes to NHS rules there is a clear and urgent need to have a dedicated room in Tarbert for these vital non-urgent health and wellbeing services to be provided for the community

Micro-business commercial spaces

The Community Plan also incudes an action:

"Develop proposals for much needed community spaces"

Following on from the Community Plan process, community enagement in June 2024 identified local demand for very small scale commercial space.   Since then additional potential users have come forward, all of whom want to be able to move their micro- businesses out of their home to enable it to flourish and expand.

TSCT purchased the disused Fishermen's Co-op to develop to meet these needs

Shared activities to address isolation and loneliness

We will develop a flexible space for groups with a common interest/activity to be able to meet.   Current community space are not suited to activities involving carft and materials or anything wet/messy, or workshop activities.

This would increase the number and range of activities locally and bring people together to share their knowledge and enjoy their interests with others.  This will address isolation and loneliness across various cohorts.

3.   What positive changes will your project bring about?

  • Enabling private and confidential health and well-being consultations, counselling and group sessions for all members of the community,
  • Hosting private and confidential public and 3rd sector advice services will help individuals and the wider community address health, personal finance, housing and other concerns, thus gaining control and improvement to these key areas of their lives.
  • Creating commercial space for local micro-businesses will enable them to grow and flourish.   This will increase local income from craft and other small businesses.   It will also enable people to develop their business skills, and fulfil ambitions to create, own and expand their business.
  • Providing a flexible space for shared craft, IT and other activities will enable a wider range of local activities for people of all ages and abilities.   This will bring people together for shared experiences, addressing isolation and loneliness particularly among young people and retirees.
  • Operating a Community Board will help empower people to tackle and take control of health, housing, personal finance and other issues.
